A series of mononuclear gold(iii) complexes of the general formula [AuCl3(diazanaphthalene)], where diazanaphthalene is quinazoline (qz, 1), phthalazine (phtz, 2), 1,5-naphthyridine (1,5-naph, 3), 1,6-naphthyridine (1,6-naph, 4) or 1,8-naphthyridine (1,8-naph, 5), were prepared and fully characterized. The complexes 1-5 consist of discrete monomeric species with the Au(iii) cation in a square planar coordination geometry surrounded by three chloride anions and one diazanaphthalene ligand. Crystallographic studies indicate the presence of an extended 4 + 1 or 4 + 2 geometry around the square planar [AuCl3(diazanaphthalene)] center due to AuMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISCl and AuMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISN interactions. The crystal structures of these complexes are controlled by a variety of intermolecular interactions that utilize the amphiphilic properties of the coordinated chloride anions and involve C-H groups, pi-electrons, and an uncoordinated nitrogen atom of the diazanaphthalene ligand. The usual offset pi-stacking between the N-heteroaromatic ligands appears to be completely hindered between the 1,5-naph fragments and significantly weakened between the 1,6-naph and 1,8-naph in their respective complexes 3, 4 and 5, for which the average molecular polarizability (alpha) values are the lowest in the series. It is remarkable that the [AuCl3(benzodiazine)] complexes 1 and 2 form centrosymmetric crystals, but the [AuCl3(naphthyridine)] complexes 3-5 assemble into non-centrosymmetric aggregates, making them potential alternatives to the previously studied systems for application in various fields by taking advantage of their polarity.

Pentacyanoferrate(II) complex of pyridine-4-and pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid as source of HNO: investigation of anti-tubercular and vasodilation activities

A pharmacophore design approach, based on the coordination chemistry of an intimate molecular hybrid of active metabolites of pro-drugs, known to release active species upon enzymatic oxidative activation, is devised. This is exemplified by combining two anti-mycobacterial drugs: pyrazinamide (first line) and delamanid (third line) whose active metabolites are pyrazinoic acid (PyzCOOH) and likely nitroxyl (HNO (or NO.)), respectively. Aiming to generate those active species, a hybrid compound was envisaged by coordination of pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (PyzCONHOH) with a Na-3[Fe-II(CN)(5)] moiety. The corresponding pentacyanoferrate(II) complex Na-4[Fe-II(CN)(5)(PyzCONHO(-))] was synthesized and characterized by several spectroscopic techniques, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations. Chemical oxidation of this complex with H(2)O(2)was shown to induce the release of the metabolite PyzCOOH, without the need of theMycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb) pyrazinamidase enzyme (PncA). Control experiments show that both H2O2- and N-coordinated pyrazine Fe(II)species are required, ruling out a direct hydrolysis of the hydroxamic acid or an alternative oxidative route through chelation of a metal center by a hydroxamic group. The release of HNO was observed using EPR spectroscopy in the presence of a spin trapping agent. The devised iron metal complex of pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid was found inactive against an actively growing/non-resistantMtbstrain; however, it showed a strong dose-dependent and reversible vasodilatory activity with mostly lesser toxic effects than the reference drug sodium nitroprussiate, unveiling thus a potential indication for acute or chronic cardiovascular pathology. This is a priori a further indirect evidence of HNO release from this metal complex, standing as a possible pharmacophore model for an alternative vasodilator drug.

Regioselective N-alkylation of some imidazole-containing heterocycles and their in vitro anticancer evaluation

Imidazole-containing heterocycles: Imidazopyridines, imidazopyrimidines and imidazopyra-zines can exist more tautomeric forms than benzimidazoles. Their regioselectivities were determined for N-alkylations with 4-fluorobenzyl bromide under basic conditions (K2CO3) in DMF. We observed that, regioisomers were mainly formed as a mixture in this reaction and N-benzylation occurs at a higher ratio on six membered heterocycles. Their structural assignments were made with the use of two-dimensional H-1-H-1 NOE (nuclear overhauser effect spectroscopy, NOESY). Complementary structural informationwas provided by 2D-HMBC spectra of the compounds. Synthesized compounds were tested for in vitro cytotoxic activities against Human colon cancer cell line (HCT-116) and leukemia cell lines (K562 and HL-60) by MTT test. Among them, imidazopyridine analogue 10, bearing bromine atom at the C-6 position of the pyridine moiety, gave the lowest IC50 value with 6-7 mu g/mL against all three cancer cell lines. In addition, the nucleophilic addition of deprotonated 1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehydes to the vinyl moiety of the yielded 3-diazenylacrylonitriles could trigger domino cyclization to afford the 3H-pyrazolo[3,4-e]pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine derivatives. Computational studies suggest that the oxidation of 1H-pyrazol-5-amines in the presence of PhIO is through the formation of a hydroxylamine intermediate followed by elimination of H2O to result in the ring-opening product. The detailed domino cyclization pathway leading to the pyrazolo-pyrrolo-pyrazine scaffolds is revealed.

Synthesis, structure and photoluminescence properties of three copper(i) iodide based inorganic-organic hybrid structures with pyrazine derivatives

By using pyrazine derivatives, three different types of copper(i) iodide based inorganic-organic hybrid structures, 1D-CuI(2-mo-pz) (1, 2-mo-pz = 2-methoxy-pyrazine), 2D-CuI(2,3-dm-pz)(0.5)(2, 2,3-dm-pz = 2,3-dimethyl-pyrazine), and 2D-Cu2I2(2,5-dm-pz)(2)(3, 2,5-dm-pz = 2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine), have been obtained by using a slow-diffusion method. Single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that these hybrid structures are a one-dimensional (1D) staircase chain based structure, two-dimensional (2D) staircase-chain based structure, and 2D rhomboid dimer based structure, respectively. All of the three compounds show photoluminescence, with the internal quantum yield (IQY) as high as 88.2% for1. This work provides evidence that for this type of hybrid materials, the structure of the inorganic module could be determined by the selection of the organic ligands and that the substituted group on the organic ligands can influence the luminescence efficiency of the hybrid structures.

A domino annulation approach to 3,4-diacylpyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazines: decoration of pyrazine units

A new one-pot, sequential three-component access to 3,4-diacylpyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine was achieved from the reaction of an alpha-haloketone, azide, and N-substituted pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde under mild reaction conditions, through which a polysubstitution pattern on the pyrazine moiety of the scaffold was realized. Floral traits and chemical cues associated with rock bee (Apis dorsata Fabricius) for the host selection in West Bengal, India

In the present work, bee foraging plants were determined by palynological analysis of colony stored samples (honey and pollen) of Apis dorsata collected from southern West Bengal, India. Then flowering phenology and pollen morphologies were described to evaluate the forage preference of the bee species. In addition, chemical cues were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Foraging strategy of the bee species was profitable in that almost all the bee-visited plants were utilised for both nectar and pollen sources. The bee species became generalist visitor of several plants having diverse life form, flower characters and pollen morphologies. However, most of the bee-visited plants were of trees with synchronous type of flowering. Most plants had small-sized, yellow, cream and white coloured flowers and pollen was openly presented. We did not find any patterns in the morphological traits of bee collected pollen, though the pollen types were predominantly of medium sized with trizonocolporate apertural pattern and reticulate surface ornamentation. Floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of bee visited plants were also diversified. Compounds frequently found in the floral VOC bouquets were amphetamine-3-methyl; butane, 2-cyclopropyl; 2,3-butanediol; cyclohexan, 1-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl); d-limonene; methyl (2E)-2-methoxy-2-butenoate; phenol, 4-[2-(methylamino)ethyl]; phthalic acid, di(2-propylpentyl)ester; propanamide, N-(aminocarbonyl) and pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine-1,4-dione, hexahydro-3-(2-methylpropyl). Untargeted and targeted metabolomics strategy for the classification of strong aroma-type baijiu (liquor) according to geographical origin using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry

A metabolomics strategy was developed to differentiate strong aroma-type baijiu (SAB) (distilled liquor) from the Sichuan basin (SCB) and Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin (YHRB) through liquid-liquid extraction coupled with GCxGC-TOFMS. PCA effectively separated the samples from these two regions. The PLS-DA training model was excellent, with explained variation and predictive capability values of 0.988 and 0.982, respectively. As a result, the model demonstrated its ability to perfectly differentiate all the unknown SAB samples. Twenty-nine potential markers were located by variable importance in projection values, and twenty-four of them were identified and quantitated. Discrimination ability is closely correlated to the characteristic flavor compounds, such as acid, esters, furans, alcohols, sulfides and pyrazine. Most of the marker compounds were less abundant in the SCB samples than in the YHRB samples. The quantitated markers were further processed using hierarchical cluster analysis for targeted analysis, indicating that the markers had great discrimination power to differentiate the SAB samples.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering of M-2-pyrazine-M-2 (M = Cu, Ag, Au): Analysis by natural perturbation orbitals and density functional theory functional dependence

Here, we propose a new method to analyze various electronic properties of molecules based on natural perturbation orbitals (NPOs). We applied the proposed method to chemical enhancement of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensity of M-2-pyrazine-M-2 (M = Cu, Ag, Au) complexes. The SERS intensity can be effectively decomposed into the contributions of four NPO pairs (1 sigma-1 sigma*, 2 sigma-2 sigma*, 1 pi-1 pi*, and 2 pi-2 pi*), so NPO analysis makes the SERS intensity much easier to understand than by conventional canonical molecular orbitals. Moreover, we analyzed the dependence of the density functional theory functional on the SERS intensity. For the Ag-2-pyrazine-Ag-2 complex, the BP86 functional overestimates the Raman intensity by about 23 times compared with coupled-cluster singles and doubles level of theory, while the CAM-B3LYP functional gives moderately accurate values. This overestimation arises from the inaccuracy of the energy derivative along the normal vibrational mode.
