If needed, the products were recrystallizedfrom hot EtOH (crystallization initiated by cooling and dropwise addition of cold water).

HCl (10 mL) was added aq. solution sodium nitrite (1.1 g, 15.89 mmol) at -10 C. over a period of 1 h, stirred for 1 h 0 C. and then at RT for 2 h. Progress of reaction was monitored by TLC. After reaction completion reaction mass neutralised with 50% NaOH solution and extracted with DCM. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated under reduced pressure. Crude was purified by silica gel (100-200 mesh) column chromatography using 2% ethyl acetate in hexane as eluent to yield 2,5-dichloropyrazine (0.59 g, 15%) as colourless oil. MS: 184.1 [M-1]

The reaction mixture was stirred at 150 C. in a sealed tube for 24 h. The reaction mixture was then filtered through Celite, and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The crude product obtained was purified by column chromatography (silica: 100-200 mesh, MeOH: DCM 2-3%) to afford the title compound (0.13 g, 67%). LCMS (ES+) 126 (M+H)+, RT 1.06 minutes (method 1).
