Using pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid (2-Hpzc), 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (3,5-H(2)PDA) and oxalic acid (H(2)ox) as ligands, nine Ag-Ln coordination polymers are synthesized by hydrothermal methods: {[LnAg(2-pzc)(2)(ox)]center dot H(2)ox} (Ln=Pr (1), Nd (2), Sm (3), Eu (4)), [LnAg(3,5-PDA)(ox)(H2O)](n), (Ln=Pr (5), Nd (6)), [LnAg(3,5-PDA)(3,5-HPDA)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)](n) (Ln=Sm (7), Dy (8), Ho (9)). All of them possess the 3D network structure, i.e., coordination polymers 1 similar to 4 are isomorphic and connected by 2-pzc(-) and ox(2-), while coordination polymers 5 similar to 9 use 3,5-PDA(2-) and ox(2-) as bridging ligands. Photophysical properties of these coordination polymers are studied, and they show characteristic emissions of corresponding Ln(III) ions which should be attributed to the sensitization of the Agligand section (d-block). In addition, under the co-action of crystal field and 4d orbits of Ag(I) ion, the 4f orbits of Ln(III) ions are tuned and cause obvious shift of partial energy levels, which present shifts of the corresponding NIR emission bands and can be corroborated in their UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra. Metal-enhanced luminescence (MEL) via Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles provides a promising strategy for the superior luminescence of lanthanide complexes. However, because of the delicate structure of the composites of Ag@SiO2 and complexes, it remains a great challenge to achieve the ideal MEL effect. Herein, five types of Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles with distinct core sizes (100 and 46 nm) and varied silica shell thickness (3, 24, 32, 52 and 55 nm) were prepared. Four kinds of lanthanide complexes RE(BA)(3)center dot H2O and RE(pyca)(3)center dot 2H(2)O (RE = Eu and Tb, BA = benzoate, pyca = 2-pyrazine carboxylate) were synthesized. A series of REL3-Ag@SiO2 (L = BA(-), pyca(-)) composite nanoparticles were prepared through the interaction of the Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles and the complexes. The adsorption of the complexes on the surface of Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Luminescence property investigation showed that the factors affecting the MEL effect included the excitation and emission wavelength of lanthanide complexes, the kinds of lanthanide ions and organic ligands, as well as the core size and shell thickness of Ag@SiO2. Among these factors, the excitation wavelength of lanthanide complexes and the SiO2 shell thickness were found to play decisive roles. Finally, 25.92 times enhancement in luminescent intensity and 7.4 times increase in luminescence quantum yield can be achieved on Tb(BA)(3)center dot H2O by Ag@SiO2 with core size of 46 nm and shell thickness of 24 nm.

The nature of the attractive intermolecular C-H horizontal ellipsis H-C interaction, which could affect the crystal packing and solid-state molecular structure, is yet unknown. Here, a novel mercury (II) complex including N-(2-biphenyl)pyrazine-2-carboxamide ligand, one such system, has been synthesized and characterized by a single crystal X-ray diffraction. The existence of attractive intermolecular C-HMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISH-C interaction (-2.64 to -9.30 kj/mol depending on computational levels) is a notable feature in the crystal packing of this complex, which is the first observation of intermolecular C-HMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISH-C interaction in a metal complex. From crystallographic data, this contact has a distance of 2.172 angstrom which is 9.5% shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii of two hydrogen atoms, which is the primary condition of having intermolecular interactions. We study the nature C-H horizontal ellipsis H-C interaction in the synthesized mercury (II) complex using periodic/non-periodic density functional theory in conjunction with quantum theory of atoms in molecules, non-covalent interaction reduced density gradient method, natural bond orbital, and energy decomposition analysis tools. Our results suggest that C-HMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISH-C interaction has closed-shell, donor-acceptor, and van der Waals nature.

Toxic metabolites (N-acetylisoniazid, pyrazinoic acid, and desacetylrifampicin) of first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs (ethambutol, pyrazinamide, rifampicin, and isoniazid) are identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, which is important in selecting the required dosages of these drugs for the maximum therapeutic effects and the reduction of side effects. Characteristic chromatographic profiles of blood plasma samples from donors with pulmonary tuberculosis (pathology) and a clinically healthy group (norm) are obtained and processed by principal component analysis and the k-nearest neighbor method. A perspective of this approach for obtaining of additional diagnostic criteria for pulmonary tuberculosis is shown.

Orange prismatic crystals of the supramolecular coordination polymer (SCP) (3)(infinity)[Cu(CN)(2)(Me3Sn)(Pyz)], SCP1, were synthesized using a self-assembly method under ambient conditions. Nanosized 1 was obtained using the same molar ratio in water by ultrasonic irradiation. SCP1 was characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. SCP1 and its nanosized 1 particles were also examined using powder X-ay diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The luminescence emission of SCP1 was studied as well as its use as a sensor for the detection of common organic solvents and metal ions. Also, the catalytic activities of nanosized 1 towards various organic dyes were investigated under ambient conditions, UV irradiation and ultrasonic irradiation. Nanosized 1 as a heterogeneous nanoparticle catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity for the degradation of eosin-Y and acid blue dyes. The mechanism of degradation investigated using various scavenger techniques is proposed and discussed. The catalytic oxidation process is mainly caused by center dot OH radicals.

Leishmaniasis being one of the six major tropical diseases that affects nearly 0.7-1.3 million people annually, has so far limited and high toxic therapeutic options. Herein, we report the synthesis, in silico, and in vitro evaluations of novel coumarin-incorporated isatin hydrazones (Spf-1 – Spf-10) as highly potent and safe antileishmanial agents. Molecular docking was initially carried out to decipher the binding confirmation of lead molecules towards the active cavity of the target protein (Leishmanolysin gp63) of Leishmania tropica. Among all the docked compounds, only Spf-6, Spf-8, and Spf-10 showed high binding affinities due to a pattern of strong conventional hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic pi-interactions. The molecular dynamics simulations showed the stable pattern of such bonding and structure-based confirmation with a time scale of 50 ns towards the top compound (Spf-10) and protein. These analyses affirmed the high stability of the system. Three out of ten compounds evaluated for their antileishmanial activity against Leishmania tropica promastigotes and amastigotes were found to be active at micromolar concentrations (IC50 range 0.1-4.13 mu mol/L), and most importantly, they were also found to be highly biocompatible when screened for their toxicity in human erythrocytes.

We report the Pd(II)-catalyzed picolinamide-aided ortho-C-H arylation-, alkylation-, and halogenation (sp(2) gamma-C-H functionalization) of phenylglycinol substrates. Phenylglycinols are remarkable building blocks and have found different applications in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry. This work is a contribution towards the expansion of the library of phenylglycinol scaffolds and also substrate scope development by using the Pd(II)-catalyzed bidentate directing group picolinamide-aided C-H activation tactic.

Aiming at obtaining new copper complexes with good cytotoxicity against cancer cells, triphenylphosphine (TPP) was introduced to obtain insight into the influence of the co-ligands. In this paper, two copper complexes, Cu(2-pbmq)(CH3OH)Br-2 (1) and [Cu(2-pbmq)(TPP)Br](2) (2) were designed, synthesized, and characterized by X-ray crystallography, 2-((2-(pyrazin-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl))quinolone (2-pbmq), to investigate the influence of the TPP group on the anticancer activity of the metal complex. Although the presence of the TPP group diminished the intensity of the interaction properties of the complex with DNA, the in vitro anticancer activity and cellular uptake of the TPP-containing complex were markedly superior to those of its TPP-lacking counterpart. Detailed studies on the more potently cytotoxic complex 2 revealed that it accumulated in nucleus, arrested the cell cycle at the G0-G1 phase, causing mitochondrial dysfunction, involving the potential simultaneous mitochondrial membrane collapse, cellular ATP level depletion, and Ca2+ leakage, eventually inducing cell apoptosis. In summary, the introduction of a TPP group enhances the biological activity and cytotoxicity of the complex.

A new chromone based Schiff base ligand L was synthesized by the condensation of 3-formyl chromone and pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide as a colorimetric probe to detect Cu (II) ions selectively. An instant visual colour change from colourless to yellow was obtained on addition of Cu2+ ions to the probe L solution, while other metal ions found ineffective. The ligand L was characterized by H-1 NMR, FTIR and HRMS spectral techniques. UV-Visible spectroscopic technique was used to study the sensing ability of probe L for copper ions above other metal ions. The Job’s plot obtained from absorption studies and HRMS data confirmed that the Cu2+ ions bind with ligand L in 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. DFT computations were also supported the binding framework between L and Cu (II) ions. The LOD value and the association constant were obtained 3.9 x 10(-7) M and 2.3 x 10(5) M-1 respectively, via Benesi-Hildebrand equation. Selectivity of L towards Cu2+ ions was also studied and it was found that the probe L worked specifically for copper ions without any considerable influence of other intruding metal ions. In addition, in real water samples, the ligand L was fully implemented for identification and quantification of Cu2+ ions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
