A suspension of pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid 1 (5 g, 29.7 mmol) and HCl (1.25 M in MeOH, 50 mL, 62.5 mmol) was stirred at 60 C. for 20 h, after which the reaction was complete. The reaction mixture was concentrated on a rotary evaporator. The crude product was suspended in saturated NaHCO3, extracted with 10% MeOH in dichloromethane (DCM, 3*150 mL).
