To a solution of 2-hydroxymethyl-5,6-dihydro-8H-imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine-7-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (IV, 0.34 g, 1.34 mmol) in dry methanol (12 mL) was added 20% HQ in dioxane (18 mL) at 0 C and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to get the crude product which was triturated with diethylether to afford the titled product as a pale-yellow solid (V, 0.25 g, 95 %).
