Referring to Scheme 3, pyrazin-2-ylamine (1 g, 10.5 mmol) was dissolved in a solution of DMSO (40 ml)/H2O (1 ml) at 0 C. The organic layers were combined, dried and evaporated to leave an orange oil, which solidified overnight under high vacuum. 3,5-dibromopyrazin-2-amine was produced as an orange/brown solid (2.24 g, 84%).
